According to county officials on Wednesday, an estimated 300 people fell ill earlier this month after participating in a Tough Mudder race in Sonoma County, California.

Following the August 19-20 event at Sonoma Raceway, the Sonoma County Department of Health Services released a health advisory, noting symptoms such as rash, fever, muscle pain, nausea, and vomiting among participants.

It is alleged that the event used improper water to fill the mud and showers, which infected the participants with different types of bacteria.

“The race involved significant skin contact with mud, leading to many participants developing pustular rashes, fevers, muscle aches, and headaches.

“These symptoms could indicate a minor condition like Swimmers’ Itch but may also suggest a Staph infection or other serious bacterial infections like Aeromonas,” the advisory stated.

Healthcare providers are being asked to collect cultures from patients and report findings. Still, the county mainly assumes Aeromonas to be the primary cause of the infections from the event.

Aeromonas, a bacteria commonly found in water environments, mud, and certain foods, can cause gastrointestinal issues and more severe complications like kidney disease, meningitis, and skin and wound infections.

County officials and healthcare providers estimate that over 600 participants became ill from the event. Participants' injuries ranged from a few rashes on their bodies to extended hospitalization. Each and every type of injury needs deserves compensation.
